How to (FINALLY) Choose Your Target Market

How to finally choose your target market

Being able to identify your Target Market is one of the KEYS to building a successful Health Coaching business.

And it makes a world of difference to your sales when you truly know WHO you are talking to, and who you are creating your Health Coaching services for.

BUT this topic is often misunderstood (and maybe over-complicated!).

So in this video I get suuuuper personal, sharing my own rollercoaster health journey, and an anxiety attack I had earlier this year — all to make the topic of target market a little clearer.

Watch it now to learn:

  • The KEY things you DO need to know about your target market… 🤓

  • On the flip side - what you DON’T need to know about your target market! (This is where I see a lot of people over-thinking, wasting time, and getting stuck…) 🤯

[Jennie’s story Part 3] Working 1.5 days per week while earning $5k? It’s possible.

[Jennie's Story Part 3].png

By now I’m sure you feel like you’re Jennie’s best friend. So do I! She's taken us on a bit of a rollercoaster ride, hasn't she? The fact she’s allowing me to tell her story so you can really learn from her journey shows how deeply Jennie cares about transforming people's lives.

Previously we spoke about how Jennie grew her business too quickly by making the biggest mistake I see all health coaches make, and that’s not packaging up your services.

Selling one off sessions and working for an hourly rate is a one way ticket to Brokeville.

Jennie had sacrificed her health for her business because she didn’t have the foundations of a package setup that would allow her to run a business filled with health and wealth.

Jennie thought in order to become wealthy, she needed to sacrifice her health, but that’s the furthest from the truth, and I can promise you there’s a better way.

You don’t have to make a choice between whether you want to be wealthy or whether you want to be healthy, in fact, wealth is important because it opens you up to a whole new level of health - something I’m so passionate about teaching to all of my clients.

When Jennie started creating her packages, she put a lot of thought behind how they were best going to serve the lifestyle she wanted to live.

Key Lessons For Health Coaches:

When designing your package, you need to ensure you take into account how you truly want to design your own life.

Think about what your non negotiables are and start with them in mind, instead of creating a package that your life needs to fit around.

For example, if you need to pick the kids up at 3pm from school, you last coaching session for the day is at 1.45 - 2.45pm.

Your desires must be at the forefront of your business in order to run a successful health coaching business that supports you living your happiest, healthiest and most aligned life.

Anything that does not fit within your non negotiables you MUST learn to say no to.

When Jennie created a health coaching package that worked in with her busy life, she started getting more enquiries, and before she knew it she had her best month, working only the 1.5 days per week she desired.

Not only did her business packages bridge the gap between her health and her wealth, but in the process of redesigning her packages, Jennie came up with a solution that would ensure her clients got better results than ever before. This was something she had secretly been worried about with her initial clients.

Now, Jennie’s purposeful packages are a win-win for all.

[Jennie’s Story Part 2] Crack the $5k mark as a coach without burning out

[Jennie's Story Part 2].png

Remember Jennie, our lovely health coach who grew her business too quickly by making the biggest mistake I see all health coaches make? If you didn’t get a chance to read Jennie’s story, see my previous post with the title 'Jennie's Story Part 1: How Jennie overcame every obstacle in her Health Coaching Business'

In my next post I'm going to share with you just how Jennie turned her business around and is now able to work 1.5 days per week while earning $5k per month (and counting).

A few of you have reached out to share your similar experiences, and some of you have let me know you’re starting out and are worried about making the same mistake as Jennie, so I’m going to share with you what that biggest mistake is, so we can all avoid it once and for all.

You’re going to be surprised by this, but here it is.

The number one business killer of health coaches, and the biggest mistake Jennie made, was saying yes to everyone who needed her help, instead of creating a package that could best help her IDEAL client only. And yes, that meant saying no to some potential clients too!

You see, Jennie worked with clients who approached her for single sessions on whatever THEY thought they needed, whenever they pleased.

Now apart from the stress of having single and inconsistent clients filling your books every week, do you think it’s even possible to show them the true powerful transformative nature of health coaching in 1 hour or whenever they feel like it?

Jennie was saying yes to people who were not her ideal clients. She had lots of single session clients who paid her an hourly rate, and soon enough, all those hours added up, AND progress was frustratingly slow for many of them because there was no consistency or structure.

Even though she was selling sessions and working with clients, her health coaching business was robbing her of the life she wanted to live. Kind of like how working her corporate job did.

Key Lessons For Health Coaches:

Selling single sessions (or allowing your client to dictate how many they need) might seem like a good idea at the beginning of your health coaching business, but it will set you back, as you’ll be trapped trading hours for money, feel trapped by your business, and never feel like you’re making enough for the hours you have to work.

When you work with clients who aren’t your ideal clients, it ends up feeling like you’re back working in the corporate world, and you’ll start to resent your health coaching business - which is something we most definitely want to avoid!

When Jennie learnt this key lesson, she was able to turn her business around to get the freedom based lifestyle of working 1.5 days per week, coaching dream clients she loved, and making $5k per month and counting.

In my next post, I’ll cover what Jennie did to get the results she wanted.

xx Amanda

Pam Quit Her Second Job, Went on Vacation & Doubled her Income

Pam quit her second job

Pam is a weight loss coach for women in corporate jobs who are busy and tired, and more than likely have adrenal fatigue without knowing it. Pam works with them to break the diet cycle: “Most have tried every other diet out there, and I want to teach them how to break the diet cycle and just eat real food,” she says.

Pam was already working in her own Health Coaching practice when she joined the Upswing Mastermind program. She was consulting on the side, and had a few clients on monthly retainers. She’d been coaching for just over a year and a half.

“Business was consistent”, tells Pam. “But it wasn’t really growing. I was terrible with marketing. I had a background in corporate sales and it was easy to sell something else, but to sell myself was a challenge. It was terrifying.”

1. Learning to be more confident

“I’d hear someone talking about nutrition in the office and think, ‘I can help you.’ But I didn’t’ know what to say. I was scared to speak up.”

2. Having a system and a marketing plan

“I felt like I had a plan,” says Pam. “I’d fall back onto my corporate job and think, ‘The systems all make sense, I just have to do this for myself’.  But then, I’d go out there once and then back away and not do anything about it. The Mastermind program had a structure and had everything laid out.”

3. Being part of a support group

“I did one-on-one coaching [before the Mastermind]. I didn’t’ know what I didn’t know. She was there to help if I had a question, but I didn’t know what to ask. In the Mastermind I liked having other people to talk to about the same situations.”

4. Moving to purposeful packages

“It’s been more impactful working with people with a package – saying this is what we’re going to get done in the time period. My retainer clients weren’t focused on achieving anything in particular; they were just kinda chugging along month to month.

I feel more calm now, too. With clients on a monthly retainer, I didn’t’ know when someone was going to cancel. And before I moved to packages, November and December were slow months. Now, I know I’m set for those months.”

After a short while in the Mastermind program Pam decided to quit her consulting job because she didn’t feel it was what she wanted to do anymore. “I gave myself a goal of $4k that month,” she says.

“I went on vacation for a week. I kept repeated the mantra I had set up with Amanda. I looked at it every day.

When I came back from vacation I was still $2k short, and then in the last week of the month I signed up two new clients on packages and made my goal! I doubled my income purely from Health Coaching.”

Pam wasn’t slaving away the whole month, but following the structure and plan of the Mastermind and doing the wealth consciousness work (which is another layer of the Mastermind program) is what got her the results she set out to achieve.

And of course, this is just a snapshot of Pam's business as a Health Coach.

How Important is Target Market really?

How important is your target market

Target Market work is one of the essentials I cover in my UPswing Mastermind Program. In fact, it’s where we start off.

Every decision you make in your business relies on the intimate knowledge of WHO YOU WANT TO SERVE – knowing who they are, what they love, what keeps them up at night, what they’re eating, reading, watching.

Andrea came into the Upswing Mastermind with her Health Coaching hat on after recently graduating from IIN Health Coaching School. She had 2 clients, but says she just didn’t know what she was doing. She had put in work to launch her website, but hadn’t spent a great deal of time defining her Target Market.  “I was just making it up,” tells Andrea. “When magical things didn’t happen after my website launch I was pretty confused as to what the next step was.

Most people think that having a pretty website and blog is going to bring money. It’s a valid assumption, because there are others out there who seem to be doing really well and they have all the website bells and whistles. Knowing your Target Market is what brings money. Knowing who to talk to and where to find them is what creates leads and, in turn, conversions to paying clients.

For the first half of the Mastermind we focus on Target Market. We explore ourselves and our own healing and growth journeys, our own pain points, and we identify what we know we can bring to the world to transform others’ lives.  Andrea’s lightbulb moment came after a laser call with me. “It took only 5 minutes and it turned EVERYTHING,” she says. “Amanda asked me what I was coaching my two clients on and I said, well actually…Mindfulness.

Amanda said to me, ‘Could you be a Mindfulness Coach?’ The lightbulbs went off everywhere! It changed everything. I suddenly knew what I was doing.

two girls smiling

Three months into the Mastermind, guest mentors came and talked about writing copy.  I wrote a program called Bloody Good Life 101, and that’s when I started to get clients.

Andrea had hit the nail on the head. She’d identified that her Target Market wanted a ‘bloody good life’ above anything else. With this knowledge she was able to put together a powerful program that spoke to her Dream Clients.

Knowing their language and their desires gave her the material for her program. Knowing, too, how to package coaching up as something her Target Market could tangibly understand and want to buy, made all the difference. Before the Mastermind, Andrea felt she was telling people, “I’ll coach you on some stuff”, instead of having a definitive outline and solid plan to tell people about when she was marketing herself.

It started slowly,” tells Andrea. “When I first launched the program I got two clients - both millionaires and over 30 - and I was like ‘Yay, look at me…’ and then ‘Shiiiit, I have to coach them!

Having the package really helped because it made me look like I knew what I was doing.

Once Andrea had clarified her Target Market and created her first package she began to get more clear on her prices and started to raise them.

The more clients she coached, the more confident she became and the more material she was able to write from the questions clients came with and the breakthroughs they were having.

Things started to scale up, and after a few months and putting into place the marketing strategies she learned in the Mastermind, she was fully booked.

I made $8k last month,” says Andrea, 8 months after starting the Mastermind. “I’ve quit my part time job and I’m going to live in Bali. And I’m not actually charging high rates. My rates are very reasonable.

At the time of interviewing Andrea she had 28 clients. That’s 28 people were out there wanting Andrea’s Mindfulness work – just to think that before she didn’t know how to communicate that (or who to communicate it to).

Andrea agrees: “I learnt to communicate in the words that my clients were using. I had had all these ideas of what my clients needed, but I was wrong.”

And Target Market research doesn’t stop as soon as we’ve booked a bunch of clients. We ask them and get their feedback while we work with them. Through listening to them in their discovery sessions we know what they’re looking for and then discover another layer of what they need.

Target Market is a pivotal part of your foundations for your coaching business and is covered in-depth in my UPswing Mastermind which starts again early 2016.

My Booking System of Choice - And How I Take Client Payments?

My booking system of choice

When you’re setting up your successful Health Coaching business, it pays to have a scheduling system in place that will keep you from playing email tag with clients, or double-booking yourself. Yes, it’s absolutely FINE to start out with Google Calendar if that’s what feels comfortable for you.

I’d love to share with you a couple of booking systems that might suit you and where you’re at in your business (And at the end of this blog post I talk about what method I personally use to take client payments).

Also, if you’re diving right in and you are aiming for those $5K months, you might want to consider investing in something more long-term; something that will work well with you as you grow your business.

Want to know what MY booking system of choice is? I’ll get to that in a minute. First, let me talk you through a couple of other options:

For a FREE scheduling system that ticks a lot of boxes, it’s worth having a look at Calendly. You get 14 days free at the Premium level when you sign up. I like that they don’t ask you for a credit card. If you want to continue with Premium, it’ll set you back just $10 a month.

Calendly integrates with both Google and Office 365, so you’ll never double-book yourself. When you schedule an appointment in Calendly, it will add it to your calendar of choice.

When you invite your client to the appointment, they can add it to their favourite calendar in one click. It even sends email confirmations and reminders to clients (these are customisable, too!).

Calendly also allows you to set buffer times in between appointments – sometimes they’re a lifesaver!

Are you enjoying this post? I created a free worksheet for you to learn how to easily take client payments! Click the button below to get it right now.

Appointlet takes things a step further than Calendly in that it has payment collection built in. You can arrange to collect a deposit, or have clients pay full price. You just hook it up to your Paypal or Stripe account (and others).

It’s designed to integrate with Google Calendar and you tell it when you want to be booked and for how long.

And you can control appointments from your own Google Calendar, if you like, if, say, you need to reschedule or cancel something last minute.

Appointlet also integrates with your website and has a cool, responsive design. If you don’t have your website up and running, you can share your scheduler via email, on your social medium of choice, or send it as a link to your clients.

There’s a handy contact information feature in Appointlet – it will collect client phone numbers, addresses and Skype addresses and pop them into your calendar so you have that info at hand for the appointment. Like, Calendly, Appointlet will send email reminders out to clients.

Okay, I think you’ve waiting long enough to find out what my booking system of choice is. Drum roll…

It’s Satori. Their tagline says it all for me: “Simple, Beautiful, Affordable Client Care for Coaches”. And it really is.

I personally use Satori as my ‘hub’. I store my client details in there.  I’m able to customise and store my packages and programs in there (Satori calls these ‘offers’).  I send out marketing emails from there, too.

I can match my brand to my Satori app, so when clients land on my page, they get to experience the essence of who I am and what I can do for them. Clients are able to create their own account in my app, which gives them the ability to control the scheduling.

Lachlan Cotter, founder of Satori, is passionate about delivering an unsurpassed booking system to coaches. He is dedicated to continually upgrading and taking its functionality to the next level. He invites and encourages feedback from coaches, too, which I feel really gives this app the edge.

Some of Satori’s features that have me sold, are:

  • Being able to create a template for my Discovery Sessions, Coaching Programs, Signature Package. In this template I can enter intricate details, such as the length, how many sessions, the fee (and whether there is a free session).

  • Having agreements that I can customise for certain clients without having to create a whole new template for sessions, programs or packages. Sometimes things fall outside the box – I love that I have control over them!

  • Client contracts that are linked to the templates; with merge fields for that personalised touch.

  • The ability, like Calendly and Appointlet, to block out times when you’re available for sessions (and I can vary these sessions to fit with the type of package or programs I’m offering). And the ability for clients to manage their own appointments – in the event they need to cancel or reschedule.

  • Something that I’ve found invaluable is being able to customise appointment times so that, for example, only clients in another time zone can book a certain spot you’ve reserved.

  • Reminder emails that are automatically sent out can include a questionnaire for my clients to fill out before they come (checking in with them; getting a heads up on what they’d like to address, etc). The responses are stored against their contact record – see why I call it my ‘hub’?

  • Automatic invoicing and tracking of payments.

  • I can even link Satori to my email list!

Pricing for the Satori booking system starts at $29 per month (at the time of this blog post). You can sign up for a 30 day free trial (no credit card required) if you want to explore the features for yourself.

Don't forget to download your free worksheet to learn how to easily take client payments! Click the button below to get it right now.

This is a very popular question amongst new coaches. I have to say that Paypal is an extremely simple and safe option for client payments. It’s great for those clients who are overseas, as it takes care of the foreign exchange side of things for you.

Paypal allows you to invoice direct from your account, too. There’s no monthly fee for having a Paypal account, but they do take a small percentage off each payment you receive.

There are other methods out there for taking payments from clients. Nudge Coach shares a few in their blog post HERE (they also cover the charges you’ll incur).

I cover contracts, payments, client booking systems and all things business in detail in my signature program UPswing Mastermind for Health Coaches which starts again February 2016. (And Lachlan from Satori teaches one of the masterclasses within the program too)

This Post Got Everyone Talking

This Post Got Everyone Talking

I was super happy this week when facebook (finally) agreed to change my facebook page name over from 'Fuel Urban Wellness' to 'Amanda Jane Daley' (happy dances all around).

Just having the correct name on that page feels like I've come home - it feels like it's actually mine again and I am loving playing in there with lots of new business inspiration for you all.

One of the first posts I put up on that page after the change over has caused great conversation and alot of likes this weeks, so I wanted to let you in on the chatter.

You see sometimes it really is a matter of doing a few things a little differently that can make a HUGE difference in your business!

Why not try these 3 things to boost your end of week and then pop on over to my new facebook page to join the conversation and see which point got everyone raving:

1. Simplify one thing
Pick one thing that you are going to simplify in your life or business. Does your morning routine help you launch into your day or make you feel defeated before you even get going? Do you need to reduce the number of apps and tools that you use to run your business? Pick one thing and find a way to organise, minimise, or systemise it until you know you’ve made it as simple as it could possibly be.

2. Get a Mastermind group together
Get a Mastermind group together for brunch and chat, share dreams and ideas. If you’re not part of a Mastermind group, then just invite some friends who are like-minded, motivated, and love to learn new things. Connecting and inspiring is a MUST for any entrepreneur!!

3. Send thank you cards or email to your clients
It is much easier and less expensive to keep clients happy than to replace lost clients with new ones. Keeping clients happy and engaged is what helps our entrepreneurial world go round. Plus it feels really awesome giving value to other people in a way that keeps them coming back. Send some gratitude their way with a hand written thank you card. Or a simple email message is a lovely idea if you are more electronically minded. Customers almost never experience this level of personal gratitude so it's a great opportunity to build an even deeper relationship with them!

Do any of these tips resonate with you? Pop on over to my facebook page and leave a comment letting me know which tip you are most excited to try!

Is it the same tip that everyone else is gushing over?

Can't wait to see you over there (click here to take you to my page direct >>)

Why Looking After Your Wellbeing Keeps Your Business Mind Healthy

Why looking after your wellbeing keeps your business mind healthy

I love talking about the importance of keeping your business and entrepreneur mindset sharp and connected for opportunities, but how can one exactly do that? It’s so important to keep yourself healthy to maximise your ability to shoot for the stars in business. And wellbeing starts with you.

I first learnt some of the biggest learnings in wellbeing from Tony Robbins and it completely shifted my mindset on the link between health and big success.

The following are ideas that have been researched and developed, Let me know us what you think about them and how you look after your wellbeing in the comments thread below.

Making healthy food choices and practicing mindful eating can help you provide your body with the nutrients it needs to achieve optimum.

It’s also important to remember that nourishing yourself engages every aspect of your being - physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Nutrition involves our relationships with family, friends, community, the environment, and the world.

Today, try these ideas to nourish your body and mind:

  • Try a new recipe

  • Sit down at the table to eat with family or friends

  • Turn the TV off whilst eating

  • Chew, and appreciate your food

  • Avoid processed foods

  • Try a new food you’ve never had before

There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need, and that social relationships are critical for promoting wellbeing.

If you’ve found yourself working a little too independently, try some of these ideas today and make a connection:

  • Post on our Healthy Wealthy Society Facebook page

  • Talk to someone instead of sending an email

  • Speak to someone new

  • Ask how someone’s weekend was and really listen when they tell you

  • Put five minutes aside to find out how someone really is

Get active

Exercise is essential for brain health and for promoting well-being. And the good news? It doesn’t need to be particularly intense for you to feel good - activities such as walking, can have the benefit of encouraging social interactions as well providing some level of exercise.

Today, why not get physical? Here are a few ideas:

  • Take the stairs

  • Go for a walk at lunchtime (grab a friend to join you!)

  • Do some ‘easy exercise’, like stretching, before you leave for work in the morning

Be in the NOW

Studies have shown that being aware of what is taking place in the present directly enhances your well-being and savouring ‘the moment’ can help to reaffirm your life priorities.

Take some time to enjoy the moment and the environment around you. Here are a few ideas:

  • Get a plant for your workspace

  • Have a ‘clear the clutter’ day

  • Take notice of how people around you are feeling or acting

  • Visit a new place for lunch.

Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life. The practice of setting goals, which is related to adult learning in particular, has been strongly associated with higher levels of wellbeing.

Why not learn something new today? Here are a few more ideas:

  • Sign up for a class

  • Read the news or a book

  • Do a crossword or Sudoku

  • Learn a new word.

Facebook Ads Made Easy

Facebook Ads made Easy

We’ve all seen the ads that pop up in our news feed and some of them can be pretty annoying right? So how do you create a Facebook ad to attract your tribe, traffic and potential customers?

When advertising on Facebook, the dynamics of traditional marketing are turned upside down. In the past, companies relied on outbound marketing – that is, “push”. They were pushing out a message, a product to potential customers who were usually seeking out that product or service. For example, type in Google “winter coat” and sites offering “winter coat” pop up.

Facebook advertising however is inbound marketing – “pull”. Users are on Facebook to check in on their friend’s lives, family’s whereabouts etc which means your ads now need to be louder and attention grabbing to get the users focus to read your ad.

Most of us don’t have the budgets to splash out on a social media agency to create our ads, so these are our top tips to advertise your brand in the Facebook jungle:

Tip #1: What makes an effective Facebook ad?

High relevance – who is your market? There’s no point running an ad targeting males 50+ in Botswana if you’re selling a mineral make up line. When creating your ad, be sure to choose your target demographic including sex, age range and location.

Compelling Call-to-Action – we’ve all seen the weight loss ads of “A Perfect Butt in 28 days”. This is a compelling call to action as a user who wants a perfect butt will see this and click on the ad immediately thinking it will only take them a month to get it!

Value Proposition – create value in your ad. Maybe provide a free downloadable eBook to get them to “Share” or view your page. Or a discount on a particular product your advertising if they subscribe to your email list.

Disruption Factor – this is your chance to grab a user’s attention! Make sure your ad and content are powerful enough to cut through their thoughts of what Mandy did last Friday night!

Tip #2: Position is key

Reach out to people in their News Feed, as they spend more than half of their time there. Side bar right hand advertising whilst is prominent positioning, has less return on investment according to studies, with 96% ROI for News Feed ads.

Your posts are more likely to appear organic if they’re relevant to your fans and their friends, and if their friends or others like, share or comment on them.

Tip #3: Spread the love

Sure it’s awesome you have so many fans and existing customers who love your page, but you need to target potential customers and grow your reach. By choosing to target your potential readers in the ad set up stage, you can also reach up to 92% of your target audience with Facebook’s accurate targeting based on information provided by users.

Tip #4: Use your fans

Leverage your fans for the benefits they offer in your advertising campaigns. For example, when a fan’s friend shares your post, it can increase ad recall by 50%. Organic distribution with high-quality, audience-specific content will generate you more exposure from your fans and their friends, according to Facebook for Business.

Tip #5: Boost your creative

Your creative content needs to take into account your marketing objectives and your fans locations, ages and likes/dislikes. You can also test creative content with your fans to get feedback before considering paid distribution in News Feed. A great creative content piece is relevant, compelling, authentic, simple and short.

An easy way to test your creative is post it as normal on your Page, then if you’re receiving great traffic with Likes, choose to “Boost” your post. This is a cheap and easy way to promote a compelling post rather than an actual ad.

How to Create Profitable Online Courses - with Marketing GENIUS Derek Halpern

Create Profitable Online Courses

Today I have a truly exciting announcement that will benefit you in a really BIG way.

This is a game changer.

As a Health Coach, do you ever dream about running your own online programs? Can you imagine all of the people you could help if you had a magically simple way to create your own online classroom?

From what I've seen over the last few years I feel that this is one of the top dreams that new Health Coaches have for their business.
You have dreams of building amazing courses online and sharing these with a global audience - but the thought of having to learn the technical side of things is enough to keep your dreams at bay. If it’s not that, it’s the big bucks it takes to build a program from the ground up that makes most people run away from this idea quick smart.
And if you've mentored with me privately up until this point, I probably would have agreed to put that course 'on-hold'....

This is why I’m super excited to tell you that I’ve partnered with Derek Halpern, the founder of Social Triggers and a marketing GENIUS. We're going to share with you something that completely turns all of this around and makes having an online course totally possible NOW!

More specifically, you'll learn:

  • The market for online courses hit $56.2 billion in 2014 - and it's expected to double in 2015. You'll see how to get a piece.

  • The HUGE mistake people make when they create and sell their online course (Hint: Forget, BIG, 8 week long courses. Think SMALL).

  • The TRUTH about how much you should sell your course for... and why.

  • The math behind an online course business that generates 1k per month, 10k per month, and 100k per month.

  • What to do RIGHT NOW to start creating - and selling - online courses.

  • And more.

This FREE WEBINAR goes down on the following dates:
