Nail Your Niche: The Definitive Guide To Finding Your Target Market For Health Coaches + Wellpreneurs

Hey healthy ladies!

In this deep-dive blog post I’m going to walk you through EXACTLY what to do to get crystal clear on your target market as a new health coach.

So, let me walk you through my step-by-step process for doing just that!

INTRODUCTION: Why do I need a target market?

Businesses that don’t have a clear target market often have trouble attracting and converting clients; take longer to be seen as leaders in their field; and struggle to grow their email lists and income.

Here’s what knowing your target market can do for you:

  • Get higher engagement and create raving fans of your work

  • Build your authority, expert status and credibility

  • Help you grow your audience of ideal clients and prospects

  • Positively impact more people’s lives, and in bigger more impactful ways

  • Give you confidence and clarity in your coaching and content

Yes. ALL of that. Kind of amazing, right?! 😉

That is why target market is (in my eyes) the #1 KEY in business.

You simply MUST know who you are talking to in your communications and in your marketing. If you try to speak to everybody, you are speaking to nobody.

The more you understand and speak directly to your ideal client, the deeper the connection and trust that will develop naturally between you and them. (Which is important, because people buy from those they know, like and trust.)

However, many new health coaches struggle with this key piece.

So, to help you all out, I’ve put together this ULTIMATE guide to help you get clear on your target market — so that you can start attracting new clients as soon as possible!

✨ Some of these steps are simple.
✨ Some of these steps are straight up FUN.
✨Some of these steps require a little more time, thought and reflection.

But they will all provide you with the clarity you’re looking for.

What is target market, EXACTLY?

Target market is essentially: “Who would you most love to work with in your coaching business? Who are you meant to serve?”

(Other words that describe the same thing are ‘niche’ and ‘ideal client’.)

Understand that your target market will evolve!

You need to choose a target market for ‘right now’ to be able to start building your business.

Then the more clients you work with, and the more you build your business, the more clarity you will get!  You may find: ‘Oh I see more of THIS type of person coming to me for help’... or ‘THIS is the topic I’m enjoying coaching on the most’.

And that is completely fine!

In fact, it is exactly how it is supposed to unfold.

You will always be refining your target market… getting to know your ideal client better… honing your niche and your zone of genius… alllll the way through your coaching career!

But the most important thing is to choose one for NOW and get in the game. 🙂

People often panic when having to choose a target market, because they worry they will be excluding other groups.

Well, the beauty of target market is that you can speak to one person - one specific target market - and trust that whoever shows up is probably perfect anyway.

After all, they have been attracted to working with you for some reason, and will be resonating with your message, your energy, your marketing, or your program.

Now that you understand what target market it, that it’s always evolving, and why it’s important, let’s start figuring out yours, shall we?

HOW TO FIND YOUR TARGET MARKET

1. Uncover the clues to your target market that lie in your past

People can REALLY overthink target market. So at this point I would like to ask you a question that will make it super simple:

“What if your life has already set you up for who you are meant to serve?”

Because the truth is, your past usually holds the biggest clues to your target market. I really believe that everybody has been called to be a coach for a reason.  And everything in your life to date has been perfectly designed for this moment where you’re ready to become coach.

Your passions and your life so far hold the clues to who you’re meant to serve.

We’ve all lived unique lives, and very often teach what we need to learn, or what we’ve already learned.

2. Create a Timeline of Your Life

Pull out your paper and pen again. Let’s see if there’s any truth in the idea that your life might have been setting you up to serve others in a specific way.

I want you to start thinking about the major, obvious lessons you’ve learned in your life.

Just start mapping these out. You might want to write them on a page; you literally might want to write them on a timeline. You could even number the years, if you like. Whatever age you are now, or 0 to 10, 10 to 20, or 20 to 30.

Along this timeline, start jotting down a whole lot of thoughts.

Let’s start with your childhood…

  • What was your family dynamic growing up?

  • What was your health like? Were you healthy? Were you unhealthy? What kind of foods did you eat? What kind of lifestyle?

  • What kind of family did you grow up in? What were the relationships? Who were your parents? Did you grow up with foster parents, grandparents? What were they like? What was the family like?

  • What challenges did you face as a child?

Now start to fill up certain areas on your timeline beyond childhood now…

  • What were your biggest failures or frustrations in life? What were the hardest times?

  • Were there family issues – either your own or your parents’ - with marriage or divorce or death or birth?

  • What about friendships or colleagues? Anything great that stands out? Anything painful that stands out?

  • Have you travelled anywhere? Pop in your travels on your timeline, and any big things that come to you about those travel times – travel is always such a teacher.

Now let’s look at your wins:

  • What are the big wins in your life, or big successes? What are you most proud of?

  • You can come back and fill this in in even more detail, and fill in 10 things you’re really proud of.

  • Are there some celebrations in life that stand out — or are there some things that never did get celebrated, which perhaps you should have celebrated?

  • Write down some things you could have celebrated, or would have loved to have been celebrated – or even acknowledged – for.

Now let’s think about “support”:

  • In what areas have you supported others in this timeline?

  • When have others come to you for advice?

  • When have others seeked support from you?

  • And what about the other way round? When have you needed support for others? When have you sought guidance from others? When have you needed advice or needed to lean on someone else to get through a hard time?

Now bring you into today – at the end of the timeline:

  • Where do you live? What do you love about where you live? Are there any frustrations about where you live?

  • Are there any current lessons you’re going through or recent lessons you’ve been through?

  • What are some truths in your life you now know for sure because of what you’ve through? What makes you so unique because of this journey you’ve been through?

  • Are there areas in your life that people always relate to you on or always ask you about? Are there things that you feel in your life are normal — or things you feel are abnormal?

Take some time, once you’ve finished reading this blog post, to really build out this picture BIG…  and acknowledge to yourself how your life has set you up for a special set of skills that no other coach could ever have. 😉

3. Take “Visual Snapshots” along this timeline…

Next, from this big timeline of your life, we’re going to do a fun but powerful visualisation exercise designed to give you even more clarity on your target market.

It’s called a “snapshot” visualisation exercise.

So as you take in everything on that timeline, soak up what an amazing, full, unique life you’ve had. All the things you’ve overcome, all the things you’ve done in your life…  your power, your strength, and your human weaknesses too.

Then I want you to bring into mind the area that you feel called to coach on.  Whether its weight loss, body image, digestive issues, gut health, romantic relationships...

You don’t need to have a perfect answer at this stage.

Now I want you to scan from the beginning of that timeline — from when you were young — right up till now, and take a visual “snapshot” of the circumstances along that timeline where you were dealing with issues that you’d like to coach on.

So let’s say, for example, weight loss…

You scan through the timeline, and see maybe at 4 years old you remember your mum telling you something about weight. And then you remember as a teenager struggling with an eating disorder, for example. In your 20’s you remember trying a whole lot of juice cleanses.

Just go along the timeline and take some “snapshots” of anything that’s relevant to the area you want to coach on. Mark them on your timeline.

And when you’ve done that, I now want you to take some more specific snapshots around this area that you’d like to coach on.

I want you to put some markers on your timeline, and take some visual “snapshots” at these exact times…

First of all go back 6 months ago and just take a snapshot and see if there’s anything going on for you in your life at that time around this issue (whatever it is you’re wanting to coach on).

Then go back one year ago and take a snapshot there. Just take a still shot of what was going on for you in your life at that time around that issue.

Now scan back and take a photo around the 2 to 5 year mark. Was there anything major or significant going on for you at that stage around that issue; around the area you’d like to coach on?

And then go right back 5 to 10 years ago and just check – were there any significant moments there that would be good to take a snapshot of around this area?

4. Get clear on your pain-points and desires at those times...

Choose 1, 2 or 3 snapshots from that timeline that really stand out to you as pivotal times in your life.  And then jot down a few answers around those times using the following prompts.

During those pivotal times in your life: What were you struggling with?

Write a little bit specifically about your story, around your health, or whatever area you’d like to coach on. What was going on for you at that particular time that stands out for you?

Just write a few little notes to jog your memory so you’ve got it. What were you struggling with? What were you focusing on or obsessing over?

These are the PAIN-POINTS of your target market.

(This is going to be SO useful in your business, as it can get you into the mind of your target market, which will be invaluable when creating your coaching package).

I want you to write what was the biggest struggle at that stage.

And then reflect on:

  • What were you looking for?

  • What would you have loved to be free from?

  • What would you have loved to find an answer to?

These are the DESIRES of your target market.

Whether or not you did find them, or in hindsight it’s more a case of: ‘I wish I could have found this product or service, that would have been so helpful!!’ - think about what you have loved to have bought if it could have solved the problem you were struggling with.

And consider whether - IF you could have found a solution to what you were actually in pain on:

  • What would you have been willing to pay for if it made your pain go away?

  • What services would you have loved to buy if they would solve your problem?

You may want to repeat that if you had more than one area on your timeline that really stood out.

5. Which version of you is your target market?

Your target market is most likely a YOU at a different stage in your life — someone who is where you once were, whether it’s 6 months ago, two years ago, 10 years ago.

I have certainly been the target market of both my first AND second coaching businesses!

That is why I can speak to them in a way that connects and resonates so deeply.

I have been in their shoes, and faced the same challenges and struggles. I know them, because I WAS them. And I’m passionate about these topics I coach on, because they interest me! 💗

So, if you could choose ONE time from your timeline when you felt maybe that could be your target market, I want you to go deeper and think:  “Could I actually help that person?”

Be honest. If you can’t, you can’t.

But have a think about that person. And then give her a name. Make her REAL.  Maybe it’s helpful for you to realise that it’s probably someone out there called, say Shailene, who’s also struggling with this issue, just like you were.

I want you to identify with her, feel for her, and let your heart go out to her.

Can you help her heal?

For many of us, our target market isn’t some abstract person. Our target market is in fact a version of US.  For 90% of people, this is the truth.

A REMINDER: TAKE IMPERFECT ACTION, ALWAYS!

I want to wrap up this blog post by reminding you that target market doesn’t drop in overnight.   It’s a little bit of “chicken and egg” situation - the more you work with people, the more clear your target market will become.

But you DO need to choose a target market for “right now.”  One to get started with.

People often sit on the sidelines because they don’t know their target market — and target market is only really going to come 100% CLEAR once you put yourself out there and start coaching.

So we really want you to take imperfect action and be willing to explore some options.

Even if it doesn’t yet feel ‘perfect’, decide on ONE ideal client that you think at this stage you would like to work with — so you can move forwards with that one and see how it flows.  From there you can refine, and fine-tune your target market.

That is how it is supposed to work.

How to Overcome Money Objections (Without Ever Feeling Sleazy)

HOW TO OVERCOME MONEY OBJECTIONS WITHOUT FEELING SLEAZY.png

Hey beauty,

I’m writing today’s post from my balcony - a cup of cacao by my side ☕️ - feeling very “full” after a delicious lunch and soul chats with a bunch of beautiful female entrepreneurs. We talked sex, sensuality, beauty, societal standards, rest, play...aaaand sex again. 😉

And this morning I’m all set to go to the gym for some weight training - which for me lately has been all about the feminine desire to build inner strength.

Now, today I wanna talk about something that most clients come to me about once they start getting clients — AKA: what to do in that final part of a sales call, when you have to talk about ‘the money’, and your perfect prospect says they ‘can’t afford it’,

It’s definitely a time where you need to tap into a little bit of that inner strength… and it’s also very normal to struggle with, even for the most successful coaches! 💗

The good news is, there IS a way to overcome money objections which is intuitive and soulful — not sleazy — and in this video that’s what we’re diving into.

I’m sharing a really intimate peek into a coaching session with one of my clients. (An UPswing Mastermind graduate, and UPswing Momentum client, who recently transitioned full-time in her business!)

In it we’re “workshopping” her sales call strategy — exploring into what’s really going on when people say “no” to your services, what could be causing low conversion rates, and how to overcome money objections WITH grace — and without an ounce of haggling or pressure. 🙈

Click here to watch it now…

In it you’ll learn:

  • The #1 reason people say they can’t afford it (beyond not being able to afford it)

  • The 2 things you can’t really sell, no matter how good a sales person you are

  • The importance of selling TANGIBLE outcomes vs. intangible ones

  • And the 3 keys to a high-converting discovery session

Enjoy, beauty!

Hey beauty!

“Should I give a money-back guarantee?” 💰💸

I get this question pretty often from new Health Coaches in my UPswing Mastermind and community — I assume because sooo many generic business trainings DO suggest offering a money-back guarantee to encourage people to buy, as a sales strategy.

But Health Coaching is different.

Watch today’s vlog to find out why.

You’ll learn:

🙅 The #1 reason you shouldn’t offer a money-back guarantee as a Health Coach…

4 Top Tips to Shine on Social Media in 2018

4 top tips to shine on social media in 2018

Hey beauty!

Do you ever struggle with social media and feel stressed-out, overwhelmed, disappointed in your follower numbers or confused about what to post…?

Last week I sent out a survey to my email list asking what they most need support on - and so many people responded saying that they wanted more training on using social media as a health coach.

Which is perfect timing, because it’s been top of mind for me lately too!

You see, I recently returned from a week of Masterminding in Hawaii with some of the TOP women in online business right now - and we spent a lot of our time time talking all things social...

(And I will share a lot of what I learned there with you all later in this post!)

So in response to the survey answers...

I spontaneously jumped on FB Live last week to share my thoughts and insights on what’s happening in social media right now...
And served up actionable tips that will help you feel more purposeful and confident on social media, and use it more effectively to grow your health coaching biz.

Watch the FB Live video below (it's great quality once you hit play, don't mind the garbled image!) - or read on for a blog version. 😉

Firstly - how truly lucky we are to have all of these platforms at our fingertips, to get our message out to people - for FREE.

It’s really not that long ago that the only way to run a business was renting a bricks and mortar building; and putting ads in the phone book or the local paper.

So we’re really, really, really lucky! 🙂

But at the same time, with so many different social platforms out there, it can get pretty  overwhelming trying to keep up and be seen.

And we don’t own those platforms ourselves...

Which means we do have to play by the rules of others, and keep up with any algorithm changes that Mark Zuckerberg decides to throw our way. 😉

Now one thing I want to clear up before I give you my 4 social media tips is this:

The expectation of how quickly we should be able to get our social media platforms up and running is CRAZY!  Really, you should expect it to take YEARS to build your social media platforms up….
I’ve been building mine for 6 years now.

When I work with coaches, I find a lot of people want a quick fix - they want a lot of followers, and they’re focused more on the number of followers than on their engagement, their relationships online, the quality of the followers they do have - or the quality of the content that they are putting in front of their audience.

So, if you’re after the ‘quick fix’ - I suggest you close your computer, go do something else - because I’m not going to be able to share that with you!

But if you’re in it for the long game, and you’re really serious about getting your work out there into the world, then listen to what I’m going to share…

Because social media really IS the way to do that.

Even more so today than in the last couple of years.

Social media platforms are a way of bringing mutual friends together, and connecting us to millions of people around the world who are interested in the same thing as us!
The top thing is to remember that this is about true connection (not sleazy business or marketing tactics) and getting our message out there.

So without further ado, here are 4 tops tips to help you shine on social media in 2018!

1) Focus on your target market (aka: your niche, or your ideal client)

In my experience, this is something people read the book on…and then feel like they should never go back to it again.

When actually, target market is something that you should focus on alllllll the time.

You need to know that ONE ideal client you are talking to - that one ideal person you are getting out of bed/onto your phone/on camera to share your message with.

Because when you're sharing online, it’s NEVER about you.

As scary as it can feel to go live or post online - and as much as you worry about people judging you, or what your ex is thinking when they see your post 😉 - it’s not about that either…

You’re really showing up there for your target market.

(This is the same for me too!  I’m here for my ideal client, ‘Sarah’ who is trying to build her health coaching business. But it’s totally ok if your name is not Sarah… I just need to know that ONE person I am speaking to, to truly create a connection.)

So study your target market - see what they are struggling with, what they want or need help with, the outcomes they want, or their pain-points. Survey them if you can!

Because when you know you're creating something that’s truly valuable to them, you will stop focussing on your internal fear, and instead focus outward - knowing that you can, will and DO support others through your online presence.

Is this post helpful? I created a free checklist to help you take these 4 social media tips to the next level. Click the button below to get it instantly!

2) Treat your followers as friends

The biggest mistake I see people making on social media is treating their social connections as business relationships, not friends.

You need to realise that we’re talking to friends online. We’re talking to other women, other men, other people just like us - and we’ve got to treat these relationships as social connections.

I see so many people saying: ‘I don’t know what to share!’

My answer is to that is:  What would you say to a friend if she was sitting across from you having coffee right now? What would you say to a friend if they came to you with that pain-point or problem?

Be real. Be genuine. Social media is not about business, it’s about connection.

There’s a different energy in a photo that has ONLY my laptop, a latte and a green juice in it - compared to when I put my hand in it.  The difference is the human connection.

2018-06-13 01.49.32 1.jpg
Screen Shot 2018-06-11 at 14.10.14.png

So we’ve got to remember, this isn’t just about a curated business. It’s a human business built on connection.

As coaches, we can’t hide behind stock photos anymore - in fact, one of the most challenging things in online business right now is that we do need to be showing up on camera, and posting photos of OURSELVES - which can of course be vulnerable.

But to really have that connection on an intimate human level, we need to be seen.

As viewers, we want to see real people - and that is exactly what the algorithms are serving up too. If you get on a FB Live, it will be shown in the Facebook Newsfeed - whereas if you put up a generic quote on FB, it probably won’t!

So you must create content that cultivates connection - primarily photos of you, and video.

3) set up a FB business page, above all else.

I built my business using the ‘Facebook Universe’ - Facebook and Instagram - so that is what I am going to talk about next…

On Facebook - if you do nothing else at all - you MUST have a FB business page.

I see it as an online Business Card of sorts.

It may not be the piece that gets the most engagement, but you MUST have it (and if you want to run ads in the future, you can only do those if you have a Business Page).

It  is the single most important asset you have on Facebook.

And Facebook is a platform that has been around for a long time, is not going anywhere, and is important to be a part of.

4) PLAY ON INSTAGRAM STORIES - AND STUDY WHAT WORKS.

On Instagram - be playful and get your study on! (I’ll explain what I mean in a second… )

Instagram is massively hot right now, especially Instagram Stories.

If you’re not already following me on Instagram, come on over and join in the fun!

For your homework, I want you to come along and PLAY with me on Insta Stories…

Because THAT is the energy of Stories right now. It’s all about PLAY - sharing our real lives, sharing our real selves. It’s about building true friendship and connections alongside sharing our business messages. 💗

Instagram + Facebook are the two that we focus on in my UPswing Mastermind for Health Coaches - and in general I feel they are the top two platforms to focus on when building a business in the health and wellness space.

And a great way of learning the platforms - if you’re not in a program like my UPswing Mastermind - is to get on there and STUDY!

Here's what I recommend you do:

  • Click here to follow my Insta Stories.

  • See what you like, and what you don’t like.

  • Then emulate what you love - just try doing smaller things as you get started, gain confidence, and grow from there.

  • Study what’s working for other people in your industry, too!

  • Look at another health coach who is doing great, and look at how is SHE doing her Instagram posts and Insta Stories. Because I guarantee she’s taken the time, energy and money to work out what’s working, and you can learn from that.

And most importantly, have fun with it!

A lot of people are saying social media is getting HARDER.

I actually think it’s getting more real and more juicy because we can’t hide behind tactics anymore. We have to show up, be real, be ourselves, and cultivate those true connections.

People love realness.

And when you come at social media from that angle, I think you’re going to love building your tribe and getting on there as well. 💗

Let me know your thoughts in the comments!  I'd love to hear your #1 takeaway from this post, or how you're feeling about social media now. 😘

Top Tips for Starting a Health Coaching Business While You're Still Working

Hey healthy lady!

Many women start their health coaching business or join my programs while working full or part-time jobs.  It is absolutely possible - even preferable! - to start a coaching practice while you're still working.

The key to success lies in being laser-focused with the time you DO have, and prioritising client-attraction and income-generating activities.

For example, getting in front of your ideal clients, telling them what you do, positioning yourself as an expert, and asking for the dance (aka: inviting them to discovery sessions).

It is very easy to spend hours tinkering “behind the scenes” on your website, or perfecting your business cards - but actually MARKETING your business consistently is how you will succeed.

The great news is, you can definitely do that in 1-3 hours a day. You do NOT need to be working on/in your business for 8 hours a day to be successful - especially when you’re first starting out.

I asked the women in my latest UPswing Mastermind & UPswing Momentum programs to share their top tips for starting a coaching business while still working...

They offered up some excellent advice, which I'm excited to share with you today.

(For those that don’t know UPswing Mastermind is my stage 1 program for beginner health coaches and UPswing Momentum is my stage 2 implementation program for coaches and heart-fuelled emerging leaders.)

Read how THEY made it happen + get their top tips:

“I was working full time for the first 18 months of being a health coach. I made it happen by seeing clients one or two evenings per week, and working on my business during my 2.5 hour daily commute. That meant that I still had at least one day a week free to rest, and I got over 10 hours of focused work done on my business each week. And honestly, that was all I needed at the beginning. My biggest tip is find pockets of time (even if it's just half an hour!) and be laser focused on what you are doing in that time - and how it brings you closer to your goals.”

- Amanda Pickering - UPswing Momentum

“When I first started my business, I was working 4 days a week with a 2.5 hour round-trip commute. I allocated one night per week plus time on the weekend for clients, and was able to use the commute to work on my business. I set goals each week, and used my commute time to work towards achieving those.  Doing this while commuting freed up my time after work for my family and myself!  Even now, when I'm no longer commuting and have the freedom of working from home, I set aside dedicated time and hours for my business to ensure I get stuff done.”

Melinda Benstead, UPswing Momentum

“I made the time in my daily calendar for the hours I wanted to do health coaching alongside my current job - and stuck to them. I find that working while I start my business is helping me manage my income. I’ve also found that putting parameters around exactly when I do health coaching (eg: what days and hours I work on and on/in my business) in these early stages gives me time to prepare while the hours aren't full of clients yet - so I’m learning how to keep my time well-managed.”

Michelle Edwards, UPswing Mastermind

“I've put my other job into a freelance wrapper so I can pick and choose how much or how little I work… I'm very lucky to have that as an option. I am also a huge fan of the power of 20 minutework blocks. Try them and see for yourself!!”

- Margriet van Nieuwburg, UPswing Mastermind

"The more I learnt in the Mastermind, the more I wanted to work on my business and visibility! But with kids... work... family... that wasn't always possible. I started feeling stressed about it, until Amanda reminded me to get into reality. I did have the time - but only if I made space for it.
And most importantly, I needed to make time to look after myself! Once I prioritised self-care, things fell into place a lot easier. Having set times to work on my business and sticking to those as much as possible was very helpful; as was asking for help when I needed it. And remembering it’s not a race!”

“I decided that if I want my business to work, I have to get serious and dedicate some set time to it. So I started going to bed earlier - which allowed me to get up at 6am and work on my business until 7:30am. In the evening I also do work from 8pm to 9:30pm. So I consistently do 3 hours of work on my business a day. My house is a little messy now, but that's how life is! You have to find time for what's important… family, new business and work. I am going to get help with the housework soon!”

- Veronie Anderson, UPswing Mastermind

“I've been working full-time while I start up my coaching business. It has (of course) been a juggle, but the thing that has helped me most has been the Mastermind training and the group support. Both have been amazing in helping me build a rock-solid foundation for my business - within the time that I have available. My pace is slow and steady, and things are falling into place... instead of falling apart!”

12 Top Tips for Getting Clients as a Health Coach

Hey healthy lady!

Today I’ve got something special for you... I asked the women in the most recent UPswing Mastermind and UPswing Momentum programs to share their top tips for getting clients as a Health Coach…and they offered up some excellent advice.

(For those that don't know, UPswing Mastermind is my stage 1 program for beginner health coaches, and UPswing Momentum is my stage 2 implementation program for coaches & heart-fuelled emerging leaders)

These are women who 6- 12 months ago were exactly where you are now… struggling to get clients, and wondering if was really possible to be make money as a Health Coach.

Not anymore! ✨ Scroll down to get their top tips for getting clients, and discover what’s been working best for them...

1.  LET GO & BE YOURSELF

Sometimes we have big expectations for ourselves, and feel like health coaches need to be/act/look/take food pictures (insert whatever verb resonates with you) a certain way.  I'm starting to see that the more I let go of those expectations and stories and just allow myself to BE ME, the more things flow and people are naturally drawn to me.  Let go of all that isn't you and be truly, authentically, unapologetically yourself.

- Joanna Whitney, UPswing Mastermind

2. TELL EVERYONE WHAT YOU DO

I tell absolutely everyone I know what I do — and I got my first 10 clients this way  The ones who are in pain keep coming back and asking questions once they know what I do, and every time I have "asked for the dance” (invited them to a discovery session) I have received a firm yes!

- Lily Potter, UPswing Mastermind

3. HAVE A PURPOSEFUL PACKAGE TO SELL

Having a package to sell has been the most productive way for me to get clients!  Until I had a package I had no idea what I was really selling, or how to talk to people about it. Once I had a package and a tagline, it was so much easier talk to people about what I do, and how I could help them. Especially as designing the package went hand-in-hand with researching my target market. Once I knew what they were struggling with, I could create something that they wanted.

- Melissa Lowe, UPswing Mastermind

4. YOUR STORY IS A SUPERPOWER

Knowing that you can help someone with your own story is the key to helping others.  You can’t fake empathy — and when you can relate with your potential client, the wrapping comes off them so much faster.

- Michelle Edwards, UPswing Mastermind

5. CHOOSE SINCERITY > SALESY

How do I do that, you ask?  Be yourself, and offer yourself. Here's what I mean:

Be Yourself - Reflect on your skills, your passion, your purpose and your ‘WHY’ — and keep this feeling in your mind and heart.   Your drive to be a coach and help others is in itself a gift to those who really need it. With that self-belief and ownership, a confidence develops and the ability to be ‘sincerely you’ is born.

Offer Yourself - This can mean talking to people you know about your work, connecting with people who you know need support, sharing your services with acquaintances, and with people you meet. Get out there as you, in your power, with your unique skills — and offer yourself to people. Offering means asking them if they would like to learn more about working with you, and about how you could support them.

Show them your sincerity and genuine desire to help them. One thing I've learnt is that many people are afraid to ask. It's when we are in our power and can sincerely offer ourselves to someone, which supports others to accept, with gratitude.

- Sally Jane Douglas, UPswing Mastermind

6. GET OUT OF SALES & INTO SERVICE

As a Mindset Coach, I believe it’s so important to know “where your heads at”.  Observe your mindset when interacting and speaking with potential clients. Notice how you feel, what you say to yourself, and what you think about when talking about your services.  Do you feel as if it is hard, difficult, awkward, and scary? Or is it empowering, fun, enriching, nurturing and in flow?

What you believe and how you feel sets the tone, and people pick up on your vibes! Write a long list of all the benefits you offer your clients to convince yourself of the immense value you have to share, so you can completely “own it”! :)   As coaches we are here to serve and help people achieve their goals, so in my mind I don’t sell, I only serve — with a deep inner belief and certainty that I can truly help them in a positive and empowering way. When they pick up on these vibes, they start to see the possibilities and believe it too.

- Carolyn Daley, UPswing Mastermind

7. SPREAD THE WORD (AND MAKE IT EASY TO BOOK)

To get started finding clients, tell everyone you know what do, what you offer, and how you can help them — through social media, email and word of mouth.  Create a simple process for them to book a discovery session. You might be surprised who is most interested, and how many people are willing to spread the word for you!

- Michelle Joison, UPswing Mastermind

8. START THE CONVERSATION

Start having the conversation. Tell people what you do — it opens up further questions, conversations and opportunities. Have these conversations with your family, friends, personal trainer, osteopath, the receptionist at the gym…even the stranger you start chatting to in the queue at Starbucks. You just never know where these conversations will take you!!!

- Melinda Benstead, UPswing Momentum

9. KEEP SHOWING UP

It might seem like no one is seeing your FB or IG posts and it can get discouraging, but keep showing up and consistently be seen. It pays off! Share about yourself, your story, your struggles, your wins. Be you, and show your ideal client your authentic self. As people start to know, like, and trust you, they'll soon be messaging you. Be patient. It doesn't happen overnight, but it DOES happen!

- Shonda Smith Palmer, UPswing Momentum

10. CONNECT TO YOUR WHY

This has been so important for me because it allows me to authentically speak to people who need my help.  When times get tough or I feel busy and overwhelmed, it always helps to connect to my why and promote my services from that place of passion and service. I find clients respond to that type of authentic, ‘from the heart’ communication and message.

- Christina Tidwell, UPswing Momentum

11. SPEAK TO YOUR TARGET MARKET

Melanie Hansen_Momentum.jpg

My top tip is to really understand your target market and speak to them through all your social media, newsletters. blogs etc. It’s hard sometimes to not want to speak to everyone, but knowing your target market and focusing on them only has been my biggest breakthrough.

12. KNOW YOUR TARGET MARKET

Know your target market better than they know themselves. Don't just understand their pain points but talk about it in their words. Do market research.  Make sure what you are offering is something they would find irresistible. And lastly, be consistent with talking to them — even when it feels like nobody is watching!

If not now, WHEN?

Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

For me, it was four little words: "If not now, when?"

My business coach at the time told them to me because I wasn’t moving forward. I was stuck thinking about my business, studying, reading, but not DOING.

The truth is that most people DREAM but never DO.

  • They think success can start "next year."
  • They think success is easy for the "lucky ones".
  • They think success will come once they already have money or fame.

But success comes from saying yes NOW and getting to WORK!

In fact, in his infamous book 'Think and Grow Rich', Napoleon Hill states this DECISION as being one of the key factors of wealth and success.

The wildly successful have learned that saying YES is a decision that can only be made NOW.  And I am insanely grateful that I learned this lesson. I realised that nothing was going to be radically different "next year" if I didn't act on my dreams TODAY.

Those 4 words led me to the 3 most important principles I run my business by today.

  1.  Success comes from making THE decision.
  2.  Success comes from staying in the present moment (today - now
  3.  Success comes from TAKING ACTION on that decision today .

These three lines are typed up above my desk and have been since they day my mentor shared those four unassuming words a few years back.

The decision I made to get in the game THAT DAY – no more waiting – saw me go from struggling to find clients (like, reeeeally struggling) to earning high 6-figures a year from my coaching business. (And crossing seven figures in the past 18 months!!)

But it wasn't just about the money regarding STUFF or my lifestyle. Those four words gave me the freedom to invest in my passions both with my time and finances.

In fact, this year I donated a substantial amount towards a school in Africa as part of the World Teacher Aid initiative set up by fellow online marketer Stu McLaren. Being able to contribute to such a worthy cause is something I never dreamt possible. Next year I might even be able to visit this school and see the social impact first hand!

If you are serious about growing your coaching business, helping others to transform their lives, and changing the world, I am going to pass those four words of wisdom over to you now.

“If not now, when?”

Let's make 2017 the YEAR of DECISIONS and ACTION.

[Amanda's Story] From crippling money blocks to making $10k in 10 weeks

As January comes to a close and we move into February, how are those New Year's Resolutions holding up?

Still avoiding carbs? Going to the gym every morning? Spending less on that shoe collection?

Yeah, me neither...

But I do have an even more important question...

How are your BUSINESS resolutions holding up?

Well, I have one graduate who's starting 2017 with a BANG!  I spoke with Amanda Pickering before the holidays, just a few months after starting my UPswing Mastermind, and I wanted to share her story.

Before Amanda started UPswing Mastermind, she was really struggling with her biz. She had done her training, completed some general business development courses, and even had a few clients. But she was NOWHERE near where she wanted to be regarding her finances and reach.

Amanda was working HARD (12+ hour days)...

And doing everything she was told was “RIGHT” (at least what she was told in her business development classes)...

But something was WRONG. Amanda wasn’t progressing.

She knew it wasn't just her strategy. She recognised she had HUGE money blocks that were keeping her from success. However, she had no idea how to break down those barriers. Amanda knew she needed help, but didn't know from where.

When Amanda found my program, she was skeptical. She had already tried group classes and business development coaching, and neither seemed to yield results. She had racked up some debt and wasn't making nearly enough with her business to justify cost.

However, Amanda was excited by the fact that my program was specifically designed for health coaches, and she wouldn't have to squeeze some one-size-fits-all training into her business.  She figured if she could just land ONE client a month, the investment would pay for itself.

So, Amanda took the plunge. And she's so happy she did.

Amanda discovered that with a Mastermind course, she actually broke through her limiting beliefs FASTER. This is because when working in a group she was able to experience the breakthroughs of her classmates as well as her own. She learned she wasn't alone, her anxieties and fears were shared by everyone in the group. This allowed her to feel more confident and ambitious with her dreams.

Amanda's results?

Ten weeks after starting the UPswing Mastermind she had made her first $10K!  She had landed eight discovery calls. (She only had 3 in the past year and a half) and she was able to go part-time at her job.  She's now positioned to go full-time with her business, and I can't WAIT to see what happens next for her!

If you want to listen to Amanda's full story, I did an interview with her right here >>

My favourite thing she said in the whole interview was that she felt that ANYONE could have her success.  The step-by-step process I provide for building your packages, marketing, and piecing together your business plan, is foolproof.

If you show up, and do the work, you will succeed.

You don't have to sacrifice your HEALTH to achieve WEALTH

Burnout it no joke.

And I'm guessing you're so passionate about self-care and starting your health coaching biz because you know exactly what I mean.

Before I became a health coach, I worked in corporate advertising for 15+ years. I worked with clients like Coca-Cola, eBay, Nokia, and Microsoft (just to name a few). Let me tell you, after THAT many years, I was stressed to the max.

During that time, I developed a whole bunch of health problems (thanks, stress!).

As a result, I discovered health coaching and realised I needed to start taking better care of ME. So I did. I instantly fell in love with yoga, meditation, nutritional adjustments, energy healing. And while all those things helped (and became my obsessions) no matter how much self-care I squeezed into my life, I was still chronically burnt out. Something BIG needed to change.

You don't have to sacrifice your HEALTH to achieve WEALTH.png

Now, the ironic thing is that when I first started my business I fell RIGHT BACK into those workaholic patterns I learned in my corporate job. Old habits die hard.

The idea that I had to sacrifice my health to achieve wealth was so engrained in my very being that I just KEPT doing it. #SODAMNWRONG

As a Health Coach I felt like such a FRAUD!

But the other big reason that I fell back into this burnout trap was that most of the businesses coaching I received focused on the idea of ‘the hustle.' In other words, I was told that I HAD to take myself to the limit, and work hard to PUSH  product, book clients, and make money.

While I completely believe you do have to put in the work, especially in the first few years, this masculine ‘push’ approach to business isn't going to work in the long term for your health coaching business.

So I put the generic business coaching aside, and found my own way.

And that has made all the difference!

Has this post been helpful? Are you ready to take care of your health while you grow your wealth? Get my FREE checklist with 6 important self-care tips by clicking the button below! It’s that easy.

Now I run my business in a way that supports my health AND wealth, and works around MY life instead of the other way around.

My life is full of love, adventure, free-time, and it's all on my own terms.

And guess what? You can do this too!

Consistent Clients, a good income and a healthy freedom-based lifestyle is ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE for you. You just need a little direction.
