Do you feel like no one is listening when you are looking for health coaching clients?

Like no one really ‘wants’ what you are offering?

Like people go cross-eyed when you tell them you’re a ‘health coach’

And if you are really, really honest, the only people you are really talking to are your family anyway….

Where are those masses of ‘raving fans’ you’ve heard other coaches brag about?

What makes them so special?

Arrg, seriously, I remember feeling this exact way when I started out in my health coaching business.

Friends made it look easy to have a zillion online followers and preaching the mantra ‘the money’s in the list’

Honestly, I didn’t even know what a ‘list’ was….

But once I understood the concept and power of a having a list of people who signed up to get a regular newsletter from me (aka ‘my loyal list’) I truly was blown away.

You see, building my own following of people who had ASKED to hear about my health coaching services – who were actually INTERESTED – was a game changer.

Talking about health coaching to someone who is NOT interested in the first place is equivalent to flogging a dead horse – a HUGE waste of time and energy – and the biggest self-esteem crusher ever!

The good news is that building a loyal list is not an elusive popularity game only available to those health coaches who are models or celebs.

Nope, a solid list building strategy is an online marketing foundation – it’s a series of steps, which (if followed) will build a loyal following quick smart.

I’m truly grateful that I grasped this concept reasonably early in my coaching career and have built a large following of people I can communicate with every week.

(Side note, I’ve heard 3 people in the last week claim that not building their list from day one of their business is their biggest regret)

BUT here’s the key concept I want you to remember.

I want you to think of the people on your new list as ‘friends’ – real friends.

Your friends don’t want to be sold to constantly – they want to chat with you about topics of mutual interest.

Giving massive value in your newsletters (once you build a list) is KEY.

I’d love to talk about ‘giving’ more in another email, but for now, let’s pull back.

The beauty of this formula is that by creating a massive value freebie for a painpoint that you KNOW your ideal client has, then you will only attract those who WANT that information and therefore WANT to hear from you regularly.

They are MUCH more likely to become a paying client too!

You Have Value Coaching

 

I believe that in order to be a great coach, you have to value coaching. Joining a coaching mastermind is, in my opinion, the best thing a new health coach can do for themselves and their business. This means investing in yourself.

Investing in yourself can be one of the most difficult decisions to make when new health coaches are considering growing their coaching business. 

Truth - it can be scary!

Yet when you think about it logically, how can you ever expect your potential clients to value investing in coaching, if you as the coach don't value it highly in your own life first?

 

I caught up with Shaina when she’d just completed my 6 month UPswing Mastermind program and we got chatting about just that.

Let me set the scene: Shaina is a gifted personal trainer, dance teacher and fitness instructor who wanted to grow her business so that she could have more time and money for her family.

My issue was no money to join the program,” says Shaina. 

At the time of joining, Shaina was charging $30 a session as a trainer. It’s hard to justify spending thousands on a program when there is not much money coming in to begin with. Well, that’s the logic we naturally apply to a situation like this.

JUST GO OUT THERE AND DO THIS

Before I signed up, Amanda gave me a bit of advanced coaching to say ‘go out there and do this’,” continues Shaina. “I knew I had to get some clients before I even started the Mastermind!"

After I picked up my first client it gave me confidence to get more clients to pay for the program. Then, when I knew I could get clients, I felt confident enough to ask to borrow for the first payment, and ever since I’ve been getting clients in order to pay for myself."

Shaina’s story is not uncommon. It is a large story around money itself. It’s the fear that new coaches have to overcome - around investing in the program - that ironically propels them forward.

It was a leap of faith,” agrees Shaina. “I had feelings of knowing the program was for me, and the fear of money, and knowing if I told my husband how much it was going to cost he would say I’m crazy."

I had to overcome that fear and take the leap of faith, knowing that I was going to go where I couldn’t go on my own [in my business] and that the UPswing Mastermind was what I needed in order to get there.”

From charging $30 a session, and a couple of weeks into the UPswing Mastermind program, Shaina started upping her price to $500 for the next clients. “Then 2 weeks later again, I jumped to $1000 for my 3 month program, and it’s gotten better and better."

5 or 6 weeks into the Mastermind I sold a $4000 package for a 6 month program, following the formula of knowing how to get clients."

NEW LEVEL, NEW DEVIL

There is a money block that pops up for coaches who start to make big money called, New Level, New Devil. It’s that feeling of, ‘Who am I to be making this money? Who is this superstar clicking her fingers and making all this money?’

Shaina continues: “The next few months after I’d had great success things went backwards and I was kind of lost and my confidence dropped. It took a couple of months of work to get back to where I was, to get that belief system back up.” 

Everyone has their own fears and money blocks; those things that are going to hold us back. But with the tools and the mindset work provided in the UPswing Mastermind Shaina was able to command really great income again when all these new mindset changes came in.

BACK IN THE GAME

I got myself back in the game,” says Shaina. “You start to remember why you’re doing it; that you’re doing it for everyone else, and then the flow begins and the money comes to you. Last weekend I made $5.5k selling a one on one program.” 

Personally, I always have a mentor on my team and I am always in a mastermind (ideal for me is a mastermind with access to a mentor within it). As coaches we will always need a coach of our won if we are committed to growth, expansion and excellence in our businesses. I really don't think it is possible to build a great coaching business alone.


KEY LEARNING

Investing in yourself is a big decision, but it is outweighed by how much money you can generate with a structured program that gives you the tools to go out and get clients. The personal development and money mindset coaching plays a big part in helping coaches to see a return on their investment. When you decide to invest in yourself everything around you opens up. And as a coach, it is imperative that we receive our own coaching support as we continue to grow and evolve.

Over the last few days I have been talking to a number of awesome ladies who are looking to join the UPswing Mastermind

I have noticed one particular theme coming up that I wanted to talk about with our whole community. 

I’ve noticed that many of you are concerned that the Health Coaching market is already saturated, full, over-crowded.   

That it is ‘too late’ to get into business. That there is ‘no room for me’ 

These are perfect examples of the ‘Scarcity Mentality’ that I taught on my signature Masterclass ‘3 Keys to Unlock your $5k months as a Health Coach’ last week and honestly – they are just NOT TRUE. 

So here’s the thing – honestly, there is SO MUCH room for more health coaches in the world – but the old way of doing business is what needs to change. 

My mum has run her own business as a hairdresser for over 40 years. She works in a small block of shops, in a small suburb, in Auckland, New Zealand – and at any one time there are up to 5 other hairdressing salons in the SAME block of shops. 

And guess what – there is ALWAYS plenty of business. 

When someone decides to become a hairdresser after they leave school, they don’t hold back because other people have already done it! 

The only difference is that hairdressing is already a mainstream occupation and health coaching is still NEW. 

What does this mean for you? 

Actually – it means the exact opposite of what you think… 

It means YOU are actually the leader. 

Collectively, we are still the leaders in this important new profession and it is up to US to get our work out there so that people get the support on their health that they deserve to live happy and healthy lives.

 

 

Now there is one ‘bad’ piece of news. 

The truth is that the ‘old way’ of being a health coach is kinda saturated. 
It’s not longer enough to be ‘just a health coach’ – that novelty has indeed passed. 

There is no point copying Kris Carr’s website and expecting overnight success – it just won’t work. 

It’s time to get smart with our marketing and our message and treat our businesses like any other business in the world would do to have a true impact. 

Business for Health Coaches has grown up. 

And that’s the good news. It means as a profession we can now make a BIG impact (and income for ourselves along the way) 

For those joining UPswing Mastermind in 2016 we will be really working on ‘positioning’ your business so that there simply can not be any competition. 

That old story of ‘there’s no room for me’ will be banished for good.

Lets create your 2016 intentions

 

How was your big breathe out? What’s bubbled up for you over the past few days? 

With 2015 gently released, it’s time to consider all parts of your life and create your intentions for 2016. 

Go grab your journal. You’ll also need a separate piece of paper. 

1. Under each of the following categories, add 3 goals you’d like to achieve – bonus points if the goals are aligned with how you’d like to FEEL. 

A.      Love and relationships 
B.      Career 
C.      Spiritual 
D.      Body

2. Choose just 1 word for each of category that sums up your heart’s deepest desire in that area of life. 

3. Now choose the ONE word out of all of them that sums it all up and write this on your piece of paper. 

4. Put this piece of paper somewhere special, next to some crystals perhaps, and light a tea light candle to place on top. 

5. ASK the universe for guidance. To see this through to its highest possibility. And TRUST it is being taken care of from here. 

Spend the next few days meditating on this desired outcome, feeling or goal – integrating into your body and soul that it is truly being taken care of.

I'm back in Sydney after 2 glorious weeks in Bali - seriously I think Bali is THE perfect holiday spot in the world. Warm, sunny, loving people, raw food and yoga galore! #bliss

A key thought that arose for me when I stopped 'working' while on holiday was that I personally have a deep knowing that you are MEANT to get your health work out to the world now - the world is so ready for what you have to offer - and I think deep down you know this too.

So why then would you keep getting in your own way???

On one hand you want nothing more than to build your business and help as many people as possible. On the other hand, you seem to keep going round in circles. 

Frustrating right?!

I hear you! For way too long I was stuck in my head trying to 'work it all out'. When I changed my mindset to believe that I was MEANT to be getting my work out to the world and am ALWAYS SUPPORTED in doing so, then I started trusting and taking imperfect action despite my fears.

You see we have a sneaky monkey-mind (or Ego) that likes to jump in and fill us with fear when venturing into this new territory of business.

The monkey mind tells us 'nothing is working', 'it's not going to work for you', 'you are not expert enough yet', 'who do you think you are to charge for this' and on it goes.... Creating a barrage of negative thoughts that keep you playing small.

 

 

Listening to our Monkey-Mind causes us to Self-Sabotage!

But what if those monkey-messages were not the truth?

What if you got out of your own way and started taking imperfect action in your business every day KNOWING that you are MEANT to do this and are fully supported?

How would you act differently if this were to change?

For me this changed everything and today I wanted to share with you 7 things I do regularly that keep me building my business from my heart, not my head.

1. Journalling
- I started journalling 3 pages a day after learning 'Morning Pages' from Julia Cameron's book The Artists Way about 9 years ago and have never stopped. It is my number one go-to for getting everything out of my head and onto paper.

2. Meditation
- I alternate in my approaches to Meditation depending on what I am focusing on or working through. I was recently introduced to the new 1 Giant Mind phone app which I am LOVING. Daily meditation will change your approach to your business dramatically, and the app is perfect to pull out any time of the day if you catch yourself being run by Mr Monkey Mind.

3. Working Out
- I have realised that there is a direct link to my Monkey Mind playing up when I am not regularly exercising. For the last year I have committed to my exercise routine by having my Personal Trainer come to me at home twice a week, and whenever possible I love to take the afternoon off to walk around the rocks with a girlfriend. 

3. Yoga
- When we spend so much time in our heads, we can literally get stuck there. Yoga connects me back to my body, heart and breathe like clockwork. I have a wee yoga corner set up in my office to practise Restorative Yoga which is my favourite and I have done several yoga retreats this year to deeply reset, let go and connect to MY truth. 

4. Angel Cards
- Every morning and night I pull an Angel Card (or other card deck) to help me connect to my inner guidance. I also work with these when coaching to remind myself and my clients to get out of our own way. My favourite card decks for business are 'Success Cards' by Deepak Chopra and 'Money and the Law of Attraction' cards by Esther and Jerry Hicks. 

5. Taking Proper Breaks
- The catch-cry of the coaching industry can be 'work from anywhere' and while I CAN do that, in general I choose not to. Why? Because when I book a holiday it is important to me to have time completely disconnected. I do regularly work in different locations around the world, but I set clear boundaries on what is 'work' and what is a 'break'. I spent the last 2 weeks in Bali and the first week was work, the second a complete break. Weekends are also breaks and other than during 'launch periods', I don't work at night. Work smart and hustle when you are 'on' and then allow yourself to properly turn 'off'.

6. Intention Setting with Essential Oils
- Essential Oils can quickly change your emotional state. I work with the highest quality oils and my favs are labelled with an intention which I believe works on 2 fronts. First by the power of my thought behind using that oil and secondly the vibration in the oil itself. My fav oils are made by my friend Michelle of Sacred Self -  'Abundance', 'Passion', 'Truth' and 'Self Love' are some of my favs to work with in business.

7. Reading Books on Wealth Consciousness
- Approaching business and money from an energy perspective is a great way to get out of our heads and connect with the bigger picture. A couple of my go-to books are 'The Science of Getting Rich' by Wallace D Wattles, 'Money a Love Story' by Kate Northrup and 'Sacred Success' by Barbara Stanny.

On top of these tools, I always find that remembering that my work is not 'about me' and keeping focused on how I can serve those who need it most is key in staying out of my own way and creating self-sabotage.

So here's the thing...

I have a bit of a thing for stationery.

My husband has a rule: “No more journals until you have used all of the others”.

Of course I never listen.

I always have several journals on the go. Personal journals for daily intentions, nighttime journaling and thoughts and meanderings. And stacks of notebooks to write client notes as I coach, lesson notes for UPswing Mastermind modules and blog post ideas.

Then of course I have lots of fancy to-do list notepads. (Even though I now work purely from Asana, sometimes it’s nice to just rewrite the tasks for the day on good ole fashioned pretty paper don’t you think? ;-)

Now here’s the thing, despite having a love for stationery – in general I always bought the ‘sensible’ goods. Maybe the odd fancy diary or planner from Kikki K (awesome stationery shop here in Australia) or fun notepad from Typo, but in general most things are from Officeworks - practical, sensible and cheap.

For almost a year I walked past my favourite homeware shop each morning which stocks the most AMAZING Kate Spade designer stationery.

 

 

OMG – have you seen it’s gorgeousness?

Pretty gold staplers, fancy pencils with inspiring quotes and notebooks made of Kate Spade signature prints.

SWOOOOOOOON!

But did you know, for almost a year I walked past that shop every morning and despite no doubt physically drooling as I forced my eyes away from the window – somehow I never noticed that I WANTED that stuff.

Hmm, yes, kinda obvious now.

But I was so programmed to not even ‘dream’ of spending money on such ‘frivolous’ items that it honestly never logically occurred to me to consider purchasing.

It didn’t even cross my logical mind that I ‘could’!

So a few weeks back I went in and spent $250 on the most BEAUTIFUL Kate Spade stationery (Yes I bought half the range). And every day at my desk (or at the café as it was this week), I am getting to enjoy the beauty of these little works of art.

My friend and photographer Wendy K Yalom talks about ‘personal attraction factor’. By this she means we simply are attracted to and desire what our eye goes to, but for most of us we second guess ourselves and over think things waaayyyyy too much.

We block out the possibility that what we are window shopping for is something that is ‘meant’ for us!

Can you relate?

The truth is that desires are meant to be lived, they are who we are – they are not meant to be shoved down tight as ‘not for you’….

5 Minutes for YOU during the working day

5 mins for you during your work day

 

Many of us have made the exciting transition from office job to being an entrepreneur. I often lament on how different my life was working in an office – actual lunch breaks!! I would often take breaks from my desk, paid bills at lunchtime or simply a stroll in the city.

When I decided to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams at first I had so much time for self care it was AWESOME. But as my business grew I discovered I struggled to fit time in for myself as the days flew by in a busy blur. This only increased as my workload increased and my self-care practices during my office days needed to be scheduled in or I risked running out of physical and mental energy.

How do you add in 5 minutes of self-care a day, every day?! Here are my five faves:

1. Planning the day ahead

I take 5 minutes at the start of my day to make a plan whilst enjoying a green juice or my new 'experiment' with bulletproof coffee (ask me in a few weeks my conclusion on this one). I write down the three most important things that need doing from my weekly master list, then I leave the rest as “nice to do’s”. This single trick completely turned my old habits of overwhelm around. It's so important to be honest that I'm unlikely to get more than 3 key tasks a day done - and so I plan for that instead of causing unnecessary stress.


2. Set an alarm on my phone

I used to sit at my desk and power through the day, only really stopping for quick bathroom breaks. This is not healthy for your physical body or mind, so I started to set a regular alarm on my phone to remind me to take short breaks and move my body. I've talked in other posts about how I use the productivity app '30/30 ' but sometimes the simple alarm on my phone also does the trick nicely. 
 

3. Fresh air

I try and get a burst of sun each day, even if I take my laptop outside and work for a while. It is too easy to spend the whole day locked inside my office, so I’ll even make phone calls sitting on my balcony or go for a quick walk down to the beach and back. It’s surprisingly re-energising to be in nature especially after exposing ourselves to electronics all day. Whenever I can I take a full hour out to walk around the clifftop from Bondi Beach to Bronte beach in the afternoon - this is great for clearing my head and energy on busy days.
 

4. Legs up the wall

Yup, this feels awesome! This simple yoga pose will clear your mind and provide a much needed energy boost! Simply take 5 minutes and lay on the floor with your butt against the wall, legs straight up in the air resting on the wall. On my recent yoga retreat I really grasped the power of this pose like never before. If you do just one thing for yourself each day - make it this. Five minutes will make you feel like you’ve had a long afternoon nap – seriously! 
 

5. Stretch

I cannot stress this essential practice enough – stretch every hour. Even if it’s for one minute, stretching your arms, neck, legs – everything, is essential to give your mind a break and realign your posture. Especially if like me you work on your laptop from wherever it might feel comfy - couch? bed? beach? My personal trainer must have drilled this into me twice a week for about a year before I finally took it on board - now it is a must every day and my body is oh so happy for it.

We all work super hard and deserve a little treat now and then, however emotional spending is a problem for many people.

So we have compiled our top ideas for feeling like you’ve splurged, without spending a fortune. We’d love to hear your ideas, just comment in the thread below!

  1. Buy yourself a bunch of fresh flowers – they instantly brighten your mood, freshen up your house and give you a boost. By long lasting blooms so the splurge is extended.

  2. Buy yourself a coffee – grabbing a store bought coffee everyday can become expensive but if you treat yourself occasionally to sitting down with a delicious latte in a gorgeous café, it’s worth every cent.

I love talking about the importance of keeping your business and entrepreneur mindset sharp and connected for opportunities, but how can one exactly do that? It’s so important to keep yourself healthy to maximise your ability to shoot for the stars in business. And wellbeing starts with you. 

I first learnt some of the biggest learnings in wellbeing from Tony Robbins and it completely shifted my mindset on the link between health and big success.

Nourish

Making healthy food choices and practicing mindful eating can help you provide your body with the nutrients it needs to achieve optimum.

It’s also important to remember that nourishing yourself engages every aspect of your being - physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Nutrition involves our relationships with family, friends, community, the environment, and the world.

Today, try these ideas to nourish your body and mind:

  • Try a new recipe

  • Sit down at the table to eat with family or friends

  • Turn the TV off whilst eating

  • Chew, and appreciate your food

  • Avoid processed foods

  • Try a new food you’ve never had before

 

Connect

There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need, and that social relationships are critical for promoting wellbeing. 

If you’ve found yourself working a little too independently, try some of these ideas today and make a connection:

  • Post on our Healthy Wealthy Society Facebook page

  • Talk to someone instead of sending an email

  • Speak to someone new

  • Ask how someone’s weekend was and really listen when they tell you

  • Put five minutes aside to find out how someone really is

 

Get active

Exercise is essential for brain health and for promoting well-being. And the good news? It doesn’t need to be particularly intense for you to feel good - activities such as walking, can have the benefit of encouraging social interactions as well providing some level of exercise.

Today, why not get physical? Here are a few ideas:

  • Take the stairs

  • Go for a walk at lunchtime (grab a friend to join you!)

  • Do some ‘easy exercise’, like stretching, before you leave for work in the morning

 

Be in the NOW

Studies have shown that being aware of what is taking place in the present directly enhances your well-being and savouring ‘the moment’ can help to reaffirm your life priorities.

Take some time to enjoy the moment and the environment around you. Here are a few ideas:

  • Get a plant for your workspace

  • Have a ‘clear the clutter’ day

  • Take notice of how people around you are feeling or acting

  • Visit a new place for lunch.

 

Learn

Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life. The practice of setting goals, which is related to adult learning in particular, has been strongly associated with higher levels of wellbeing.
