Instagram 101 for Health Coaches in 2018

Instagram 101 for Health Coaches

Read it or watch it...

Hey beauty!

Today on the blog (and in the FB Live above 🔝which you can choose to watch instead of read) I'm talking ALL things Instagram!

Including:

  • The purpose behind the platform (it's very different to Facebook!)
  • How Instagram can help you to grow your health coaching business
  • The BEST kind of content to post to Instagram to grow your know/like/trust factor
  • Why you need to add Instagram Stories to your Insta-strategy, too, and how to use it

Consider this your introduction to effective instagram-ing for health coaches and wellness entrepreneurs. 😉

So, let’s dive in!

Instagram is AMAZING for sharing your personal brand, marketing your health coaching business, and sharing your message.

It is literally THE platform of the moment, wouldn’t you agree? And with the introduction of IGTV just last week, I don’t see it disappearing anytime soon! ;)

But I’m going to keep things simple for today, and stick to your Instagram grid, your captions, and your Instagram Stories.

THEN once you’ve mastered those and feeling confident, we can start to look at IGTV.

Cool?

1. KNOW THAT IT’S NOT ABOUT THE FOLLOWER NUMBERS

First things first, I have to remind you that success on Instagram is NOT just about the numbers of followers you have!  You’ll go so much farther with 200 active followers who engage with what you do, than 2,000 uninterested ones…

And with the new Instagram algorithm, the account that will likely be shown to others is the one with the most activity and engagement on it, NOT the numbers of followers. So do not fret about growing your numbers at a crazy rate, these things take time and are NOT the only goal. 🙂

So really, our purpose with Instagram is to foster engagement and cultivate connection with our ideal client.

Because instagram is a SOCIAL platform and your followers are really your friends.

To do this you can:

  • Craft compelling posts…
  • Share value (by providing gold nuggets of information that help your followers)…
  • Respond to your comments…
  • Pour your love into the platform, and invest time into your community....
  • Get a little vulnerable, and share your personal and business stories…
  • And connect at a human level as well as a ‘leader’ / ‘teacher’ / ‘expert’ one.

On Instagram you get to wear a couple of hats, which is awesome! 😉

2. THIS really MAKES A DIFFERENCE ON INSTAGRAM

The power on Instagram comes when you don’t just share what you do and show how you can help people (although you MUST do that too)...

But when you also share who you ARE.

I’ve said this before, in a previous FB live and blog post on How to Shine on Social Media - but it is SO important to remember that we are human beings building businesses based on human connection.

Your value as a health coach isn’t only found in WHAT you’re selling - although that is really important too, and is something you must talk about on Instagram - but it is also found in the fact that YOU are the one selling it.

Is this post helping you think about your Instagram account as a business to help grow your audience and impact? If so, continue to work on these ideas in your very own worksheet I made for you. Click the the button below to get it instantly.

Because the only thing that can truly differentiate you from your peers and competitors is YOU!

And Instagram is a great place to share who you are - and give a window into your world and thoughts - and it’s often the only way people can tell if they would be a good fit for working with you!

3. SHARE STORIES AND QUIRKS TO CREATE CONNECTION

When you tell stories and share pieces of yourself you will humanise your business and your brand.

So stories about who you are - the BIG WHY behind what you do - how got you here - pivotal points in your life - and pretty much “who the beating heart is” behind your health coaching business.  💗

Storytelling matters because it makes things memorable. Did you know that people are more likely to remember a story than they are a product name? Pretty crazy right?

I mean, you’ll probably already know one of my “brand stories” if you’ve followed me for any length of time.  My story of how I had realllllly bad adrenal fatigue and left my corporate career to pursue health coaching… or how I finally learned how to leverage my marketing expertise to create success as a health coach…

So you’ll become known for specific stories. Not just your informational and educational posts. Someone will remember you because of that post you wrote about your adrenal fatigue - it will stick in their mind!

And beyond that, you can create FUN connection points that ALSO make you memorable!

Insta doesn’t just have to be a place for interesting or inspiring stories.

You can and should also share FUN quirky things like your love of yoga pants, that acai bowl from your local cafe, your obsession with matcha lattes or Kate Spade stationery - these kind of connections can seem ‘silly’ but they are so amazing for building relationships with your audience and growing your ‘know, like and trust’ factor.

So that when the times come to sell, your tribe trusts and KNOWS you so much more.

Because bottomline is we buy from people we know, like and trust.

4. SHow YOUR FACE AND POST PHOTOS of your LIFE

Humanise your brand and business by sharing your face, and photos from work and life. I know that when it comes to our businesses, it’s uncomfortable to get on camera; but in order for people to truly understand and admire you and your health coaching services, they need to know the person and the places behind it too!

There is so much power in human connection. Harness this with stories as I just said - but also with photos from your life, snapshots of your your work, and pictures of you.

Things like 📸

  • Anything use daily in your work - like your laptop. Your journal. Your notebook. Your kitchen. The office or gym you train or coach people out of. Your candle that you burn at your desk. Showing these things you use in your work helps people picture what it’s like working with you!
  • Show yourself behind the scenes in your office, cooking, coaching, working out - show your life happening!  That creates so much connection and kindredness.
  • Your professional brand photos, beautiful headshots, clean images of you, include your hand, your shoes, your home in your photos - anything that offers real human connection.

5. SHOW UP ON INSTAGRAM STORIES

Another great way to create engagement, build relationships with your followers, and craft compelling content that your target audience LOVES to peek at is to play on Instagram stories!!

Instagram stories are an AMAZING way to show the real you, to give people a peek behind the scenes, and to show them how you “do health”.

I recommend posting 3-8 stories per day, if you can!  Why? Well, with Instagram’s algorithm, accounts that are active and engage on the Gram daily (this includes Insta Stories!) are shown more in other feeds… so it pays to be consistent.

Think... What you had for breakfast? Your morning routine? What you eat while you’re out? Your exercise routine? How you schedule your day? Your family life? Your pets? What you do for fun? What music you listen to?

The possibilities are endless here and people LOVE seeing your face, getting to know you better, and having a window into your world… (Human beings are curious creatures, and we all love connection 😍)

Hot tip:

Your Instagram Stories can also be saved into categories as a highlight reel when people either come across your page at first or if your audience is having a catch up on what you’ve been up to, and get an overview of what you’re about…

You can highlight topics like: Client results / On the blog / Morning Routine / Workouts / Gratitude / Journaling / Healthy Baking

Again, the possibilities are endless - what would YOU like to create and what would YOUR ideal client love?

Jot down some ideas right now of stories you can Highlight on your Instagram Feed!

6. You Have to REPEL in order to ATTRACT ✨

In order to attract your tribe you have to repel other people.  If you appeal to EVERYONE nobody will know what you’re about!  You’ll be so vanilla and sanitised that there is really no reason for you to be on Instagram for your business at all.

You want to attract people who LIKE what you’re about. Someone who likes your aesthetics, who sees the world the same way you do, and who likes the way you present your products and services.

And that means you have to REPEL other people.

That’s why you’ve gotta be SO OK with turning some people OFF - so that you can turn other people ON with your feed, your photos, your captions and your stories.

That’s such an amazing and freeing permission slip isn’t it?

You don’t have to please or cater to everyone. You get to be yourself. Because you want the right type of person to follow your Instagram … not just any old person!!

So your Instagram content has to speak to HER.  And most of all, reflect YOU.

Talk to her (your dream follower and ideal client) about your services and your own journey. Inspire her with your stories. Share your real life, and your business life. And share valuable content that helps her.

Do all these things consistently and you will ATTRACT and befriend her.

And the more you attract people who love your content - and connect with YOU - the more you’ll attract people who want to interact and engage. And when the time comes, buy from you!!

Happy instagram-ing beauty.

Love,

Amanda xx

Why I don’t aim for Freedom as an Entrepreneur

Why i don't aim for Freedom as an Entrepreneur

I have loved building a business that creates a ‘freedom-based’ lifestyle.  After all, ‘freedom’ is one of my top values.

The internet is full of claims of how to ‘gain freedom’ from becoming a coach or entrepreneur. Freedom is one of, if not the biggest drawcards for people wanting to start their own business.

    But here’s the truth.

For me, freedom is not my greatest goal.  That’s right, it’s not my dream destination.

While I value not having a boss and not having to work set hours, and while I love ‘passive income’, if I have to be totally honest, sitting on a beach doing no work for the rest of my life would drive me insane.

    Why?

I was born with great gifts to share with the world – and I don’t want to limit sharing them just because I have an end goal of personal freedom.  My goal is to use them to create the highest impact in the world possible. You just can’t put a limit on that!

I just can’t see myself in my 80’s, saying how happy I was to stop working. Why would I want to STOP using my gifts and giving life my all?

My life completely shifted when I tapped into my own WHY of knowing I am here to support Health Coaches and Wellness Entrepreneurs to rise - to be visible, to be heard and to make the MASSIVE IMPACT the world needs from your skills.

The fire within has never stopped blazing since I tapped into that truth - and honestly, I don't see that stopping just because my business reaches a point of 'freedom' - it's just not what drives me at the core.

I’d been thinking about this for quite a while when I heard my own mentor talk about this in a unique way in Austin in February.

He shared with us this model:

    These are the 7 stages:

    1. Discovery: Discovering who you will work with, what you will offer them and what they will buy. The foundations of your business. (This stage can not be skipped)

    2. Confidence: Consistent clients and income. You are confident on the product or service you offer and are building confidence through learning to market that.

    3. Excellence: Building your brand for greater leadership, visibility and expert status so that you can serve even more people. What will you be the best in the world at?

    4. Freedom: Team building, systems and operations. The focus is on how to make the business work for you - and you are now working ON the business more than IN it.

    5. Reflection: Am I happy with a level 4 business? Or do I desire level 7? There is no right/wrong answer here, it is a time of reflection to discover what is true to you.

    6. Impact: Massive change in both thinking and operations of a level 4 business. The foundations are being laid for MASSIVE impact and scale.

    7. Legacy: How will you and your business have changed the world in 100 years? This is where your purpose become fulfilled and you make the difference you are here to make.

At Stage 4 ‘freedom’ is where a huge decision point comes in for entrepreneurs. To go beyond stage 4 cannot be done alone – it takes a team.

There is also a MASSIVE difference in how a business is run at stage 3 ‘Excellence’, 4 ‘Freedom’ and 7 'Legacy’.

Most entrepreneurs set stage 4 as their dream outcome [what does the dream outcome offer them; why do they choose this?].

It’s a personal choice, for sure – and one that I think most health coaches would be stoked to achieve.

So, here I am on the verge of stage 4 in my business, and – honestly – I can think of nothing more boring than stopping there. I just can’t see it happening for me.

Life is about expansion. There is always something calling us forward. There is always something more to be experienced and created and given. There is always potential for enormous impact to be made.

I see my work as helping women reach their absolute fullest potential (that is the way you will help others) - so the more I keep doing so, the ripple effect will continue. And I am yet to find there is a limit to how much expansion is possible.

    Talk about an AWESOME career!!

So how about you? I’m curious…. Do you truly want ‘freedom’ as your final outcome? Or are you committed to having MASSIVE IMPACT in the world and leaving a true legacy – the legacy you were born to leave?

Let me know in the comments your own thoughts on this topic.

    Let’s create your 2016 intentions

    Lets create your 2016 intentions

How was your big breathe out? What’s bubbled up for you over the past few days?

With 2015 gently released, it’s time to consider all parts of your life and create your intentions for 2016.

Go grab your journal. You’ll also need a separate piece of paper.

    1. Under each of the following categories, add 3 goals you’d like to achieve – bonus points if the goals are aligned with how you’d like to FEEL.

    A.      Love and relationships
    B.      Career
    C.      Spiritual
    D.      Body

    2. Choose just 1 word for each of category that sums up your heart’s deepest desire in that area of life.

    3. Now choose the ONE word out of all of them that sums it all up and write this on your piece of paper.

    4. Put this piece of paper somewhere special, next to some crystals perhaps, and light a tea light candle to place on top.

    5. ASK the universe for guidance. To see this through to its highest possibility. And TRUST it is being taken care of from here.

Spend the next few days meditating on this desired outcome, feeling or goal – integrating into your body and soul that it is truly being taken care of.

I will be back in a few days to share with you how to start to set your strategic, actionable steps to reach your 2016 goals.

Speaking of goals: Did you see my email inviting you to watch my ‘Behind the Scenes of UPswing Mastermind’ vids? There are some amazing stories in there from women who joined the UPswing Mastermind as part of their goal achieving for 2015.

In my Behind The Scenes of UPswing Mastermind video series I chat to Emma Polette who’s big goal for 2015 was to become a Health Coach, but her boss told her that she would never make consistent money from doing so, and really tried to ‘help’ her by not making a career mistake.

I’m dying to share what unfolded for Emma once she surrounded herself with people who are also following their dreams – but it’s such a better story told by her!

Pop over and watch our interview and see the truth behind the journey of building a Health Coaching business while still in your ‘real’ job.

    Enjoy

P.S.  There are a number of interviews on this page all discussing different angles of the ups and downs of becoming a Health Coach. Check them out here>>

    Relationship Building 101

    Relationship building 101

Building great business relationships is a key to every entrepreneurs success. Major corporations now employ Relationship Managers, and their sole job is to keep these clients loyal to the business - and with good reason - relationships are KEY!

If you want to have strong relationships with your clients, potential clients, collaborators and colleagues you are going to have to nurture and maintain them.

The key thing to remember when building relationships is to make it about 'them' not 'you' in the first instance.

If you are reaching out to do a talk at a yoga studio for instance, you will want to build the relationship by letting the studio know what is in it for them - how you feel your talk could benefit their clients. Show you care, show you know what they are about and show you are looking to add value to their mission.

The same applies to relationships you build with colleagues.

Something that jumps out to me regularly is just how different people approach relationship building when contacting me. I get emails every day from other coaches who have seen what I'm doing online and want to know how I did something.

Some will start a conversation, genuinely want to get to know me, share how my work has impacted them or something they've taken notice of from my work and then ask if I'm open to helping them with something once rapport has been built.

The first makes me feel seen as a human who is working for a cause, makes me feel good knowing my work has made an impact and builds rapport and trust; from that place I 'want' to give back.

Others email or facebook message me with no introduction at all and dive straight into what they want...

Guess which one's get my time and energy in return?

Here’s my top tips for building strong relationships in your business:

    1. Keep in touch with people

It sounds basic, but with the advent of social media, we’re starting to forget how to do it. If you don’t talk to someone for months, you’ll fall off their radar, or they may not immediately jump at the chance to help you when you finally reach out to them and ask.

    2. Keep note of whom you’ve met

It’s handy to keep record of who you have networked with and check in with them every so often. If they’re online contacts, keep your conversations going. If they’re colleagues or people with whom you’ve swapped business cards, send an email or make a call every month or so. Check in and say hello. If you tend to forget to make – or worse, return – calls or emails, use a task management system or calendar to remind you to call or write.

    3. Build trust

Never take advantage of people as it’s the easiest way to ruin a relationship and build a weak reputation. The key to building trust is being honest and dependable, and you’ll see your relationships flourish.

    4. Network, network, network

Networking is the key to building successful relationships, and there are now hundreds of ways you can do so. Google local groups, Toastmasters, or try Meetup.com for entrepreneur groups in your city. There are literally hundreds! As long as you are engaging with other people, you are actively networking. Even if you aren’t much of a people person, you can put yourself out there a little bit so that you can make some great contacts. Remember to make sure you have the two vital ingredients to networking – an up to date business card and Linked In profile!

    5. Work hard

People want to invest in someone who is going to provide results so when someone asks for something, go above and beyond to deliver. Hard work is always rewarded.

I'd love to hear in the comments below how you approach relationship building in your own business.

Let your light shine as a Health Coach

Let your light shine as a health coach

As I launch my brand new blog to the world today, I set the intention for both myself and every Health Coach in this community to be willing to shine our lights and demonstrate a new world of possibilities. Overcoming the fear of judgement from others and stepping into our truth regardless is what will create a true ripple effect in the world of health via health coaching.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
